What is the benefit of this powder formula as opposed to a less expensive capsule of magnesium citrate?

There is nothing better for constipation.  I believe it depends on why you are taking it.  Pregnant women take this is it helps the flow though proper diet is surely the better choice.

The magnesium oil you spray on and rub in is Magnesium chloride or Elemental Magnesium.  One excellent choice since it is heavily effected by the environment is "Ancient Minerals" with genuine Zechstein from the Zechstein seabed in Europe.  1600-2000 meters down.  That is off the product itself obviously.  So it depends why you need it.  Calm is Magnesium Citrate after it is mixed with water.  Great for constipation though I assume it must have some other use.

It is my understanding the oil is the route if you need more magnesium in your blood body.

Question 2

Can this powder be stirred into any drink, or does it have to be water?  If I get the unflavored version, will it change the flavor of the drink?

You can stir it into a drink and it will be barely noticeable.  BUT-- wait about one minute for it to dissolve completely before drinking.  A lot of people complain about the flavor, but even in plain water it barely has any taste if you let it dissolve completely.  I'm not sure why.

Is the original Calm unflavored? No citrus?

There is a slight flavor to the unflavored but its not citrus flavor - more like crushed aspirin or something.  Its not bad at all and easily covered up if you don't like it.

Question 4

Does this magnesium have vitamin C in it? it has citric acid as one of the ingredients and it tastes really sour.

Accepted Answer

No vitamin C. The citric acid is present to react with the magnesium to produce magnesium citrate from magnesium carbonate. This reaction will occur faster if you use warm water to dissolve the powder, and more slowly if you use cold water. I recommend using hot water to try to speed the reaction, waiting a while, and then drinking it. I don't know the citric acid to magnesium carbonate ratio, so I am not sure how much of the citric acid will be left once all the magnesium carbonate has been used in the reaction, but your result may be a less sour drink. However, it IS magnesium citrate, so it may get More sour. I am not an expert on sour taste. I think your best bet is to just try hot water & wait a while to see if the taste improves.

Source: enough years in a biochem research lab to figure out that Citric acid + Magnesium carbonate will yield Magnesium Citrate, unlike a good number of the reviewers and commenters, who unfortunately likely used cold water and did not wait for the reaction to finish ... you'll know it's mostly finished when it stops fizzing, as the fizz is carbon dioxide formed during the reaction. That's why the instructions say to wait until it stops fizzing to drink it.
