I heard her cry...Like the scream of the butterfly
Acid Bath rose from the Louisiana swamps during the height of the grunge era (1991) and after releasing a series of demo tapes, unleashed their epic debut album upon an unsuspecting public. Boasting album artwork from infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy, it isn't a surprise than Acid Bath offer dark, nihilistic lyrics to go hand in hand with their dark music. What makes Acid Bath so unique is their versitality, they borrow sounds and ideas from a few other sources put piece them together in a way that gives them their own sound. "When The Kite String Pops", despite being an independent affair, boats thunderous production values and sound quality. This album has en epic, crushing sound that does the music justuce. The musicianship and playing are competent, but not very technical. Acid Bath go more for a dark, violent atmosphere than a sonic assault. Sammy Duet and Mike Sanchez are the guitarists here and i have no complaints as far as their skills. They are perfect for the slow, sludgy sound of the music. Bassist Audie Pitre is very audible in the mix due to the bass heavy production and Jimmy Kyle holds his own behind the kit. Vocalist Dax Riggs is incredible here, he goes from a soothing croon to a violent scream in mere seconds. This is as powerful of a vocal performence as you're bound to get on a metal record, Dax sounds possessed. The lyrics are bleak, violent and very disturbing. They mostly revolve around murder, anti-religion and plain bizarre imagery. They fit the music like a glove. Opener "The Blue" is a highlight with a crushing slow riff and some of the most powerful vocals on the album. "Cheap Vodka", "Jezebel" and "Tranquelized" are rockers that somewhat recall Alice In Chains, but even more depressing. On the other side of the spectrum, "Scream Of The Butterfly" and "The Bones Of Baby Dolls" showcase the acoustic, melodic side of the band. Acid Bath are anything but a one trick pony. At 69 minutes and 14 songs, "When The Kite String Pops" is a little too long. Though there isn't any filler, it begins to drag after a while. Had it been 11 or so songs, it might be a little stronger. Even so, Acid Bath are one of metal's best kept secrets. Due to the fact they disbanded before they became known nationwide, they remain more of a local favorite than anything. In 1996 the band would release their second, more melodic album "Paegan Terrorism Tactics", afterwards bassist Audie Pitre was killed in a car accident which signaled the end of the band. Both albums are equally good, but "Kite String" is an essential New Orleans metal album, and an essential sludge metal album period.

Worth Its Weight In Diamonds
Possibly one of the best albums I've ever listened to. However, Acid Bath is certainly an acquired taste. Brilliantly and beautifully dark and melodic, every song on The Kite String Pops brings something powerful to the table. The band's own style varies, more or less, from song to song with lighter melodies like The Bones of Baby Dolls, and Scream of the Butterfly, and then deathmetal masterpieces like The God Machine and Toubabo Koomi. I won't rate every individual song, Acid Bath is one of those bands that everyone will have a different favorite. I will tell you my two personal favorites on this disc are Cheap Vodka and Bones of Baby Dolls. All of Dax Riggs's lyrics are written by an unmistakable lyrical style that has its roots in various death metal bands, but also strangely in Leonard Cohen, T-Rex, and the Beatles. The blend of moody lyrical styles with Dax Riggs's own darkness produces something truly unique. I have heard criticisms of the use of instruments in Acid Bath. I disagree with these, personally, as clearly the drummer is very talented as is demonstrated in many of the songs obviously showcasing him. Mike and Sammy are brilliant guitarists, both of them, with different flares and flavors of darkness... Sammy more deathmetal, and Mike more expert at melodic and smooth dark guitar riffs. Audie, may he rest in peace, used a heavy pick when playing bass, which produced a unique and mysterious, mechanical sound that could only work so well with Acid Bath's music. Plus, you want credibility? These guys lived in Swamps south of New Orleans, in houses on stilts where walking outside meant looking out for alligators. That is just badass. In short, I won't allow my bias to slip through and declare that Acid Bath is the best band of all time, that's a mistake to say. However, I will say that in my opinion, they are a great band, and one of my very favorites for their unique grindcore/darkwave/deathmetal/hardcore/swamp rock style. I recomend a look-see at Acid Bath, and if you don't like it after hearing the album a few times, fine, put away and save it for a rainy day. The more you hear it, the more you'll one day grow to love it.

This is a must-have album for anyone who likes metal music!!!
Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops is one hell of a nice rollercoaster ride of an album from start to finish! I seriously can't stop playing this album. It really is one of the best albums of all time in my opinion. If you are a fan of metal, grunge, rock type of stuff, you will love this album! It is very dark poetry expressed in everything from whispers to spoken word to singing and to screaming and growling all set to ever-changing grooves and tempos. Seriously, even if you don't like screaming metal that much, just wait until the next part of the song kicks in, and you'll find yourself amazed at how they could piece together and blend different flavors of music together so well. Dax Riggs' vocals and lyric styles are hauntingly beautiful, and the guitar, bass, drums, and backing vocals from the rest of the band are absolutely top-notch musicianship and song writing. This is one of those albums where I just start on the 1st song, hit play, and enjoy the entire album without skipping through anything. Like other's have said in their reviews though, the problem is that you won't want to stop playing it. This album is dope, and you will get addicted to it!!! Well anyway that's how I feel about it. Check it out!!! (Side Note: This album contains explicit lyrics with very dark and twisted themes.)

Rest in Power *Audie Pitre 1970-1997
