It takes alot for an artist to create a hit single or two, but it's quite another to create an album chock-full of hits that have endured for nearly 20 years (mind-boggling to think that much time has elapsed since this album's release!). Just looking at the song titles, I knew just about every song without having to listen to a single note. When I played the CD, it brought me back to a time when originality was celebrated and encouraged in pop music. It also reminded me of a time when pop radio used to play these songs over and over again, yet I never seemed to mind because they just sounded better each time. That all seems like another world today - to put it mildly! One of the worst decades in human history was coming to a close and pop music legends were making the most of the moment by releasing great albums in 1989, alot of which had a common theme - social injustices and being on the threshold of something new (which we were): Phil Collins released "...But Seriously" that year along with Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence," Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever," Billy Joel's "Storm Front," and The B-52's "Cosmic Thing." The Fine Young Cannibals and De La Soul, among many others, also contributed to an end-of-the-decade blitz of great music. Janet Jackson added her own dynamic contribution with "Rhythm Nation 1814." This album deserved all the hype it got (which, along with the original "Batman," got quite alot!). I remember the futuristic video for the title track on MTV (back when the channel did something revolutionary - they actually played music videos all day). I also vividly recall the intense radio airplay the majority of this album got over time (which is how I got to know this, minus the Interludes): "State of the World," "Miss You Much," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Escapade," "Black Cat," and "Come Back To Me." Reading the reviews here on Amazon, it clicked that Janet accomplished something that's rare for dance music: She was able to include serious messages regarding social injustices (among other topics) alongside danceable tunes and the standard slow songs. This is definitely Janet's masterpiece. It's a pleasure to finally have this in my collection. Her voice is soothing and the overall message is quite powerful. - Donna Di Giacomo

Great album and Sound quality! Love it!

OK Here is yet another pressing not getting its due! The pressing is flat, quiet and the soundstage, separation, bass, highs and mids are all well represented. Center spindle holes are perfect and there is No Skipping either!! I have a very nice setup with a very sensitive and unforgiving cartridge. This album sounds great!! Couldn't sound better unless MoFi redid it. ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE: The Interludes are Exactly where they should be! Nothing jarring about the placement of the interludes at all!! I have No Idea why customers are complaining about this! The original pressings excluded these interludes. And these interludes are how I have Always heard the album since first buying it on cassette in 1989. They are very distinct and important to the album, so to include them is being faithful to the album as it was meant to be heard! I am grateful they spread this out over 2 LP's and included them. This pressing Sounds Better than the original and is presented now in it's Entirety, as was meant to be! Lastly, WHO CARES that it is not 180 Gram! 180 Gram DOES NOT mean the record will sound better! I have thin standard original pressings that sound light years better than their 180 gram counterparts! MANY! If You're a fan of Janet Jackson, this is hands down her best album ever, and the pressing is Excellent, so I highly recommend this!!

I originally bought this album on a cassette around the time it came out. As the cassette faded away, so did my listening to this album. Fast-forward to 2014. I was just browsing Amazon and found this album on CD for an awesome price, along with the MP3 album bundled in. Huge quality leap over the cassette to say the least. This is the last Janet Jackson album I bought, as her later work didn't appeal to me. This album, however, held my interest for the most part. There are lots of tracks on this album, many of them hits and hit wanna-bee, but there are too many interludes. While I appreciate concept albums (of which this may or may not quality), I would have preferred an album of just the tracks…especially when listening to the album in the car these days. Still, I think this album and its music overall hold up very well vs. today's mediocre R&B/pop offerings. I wish Janet would return to these roots and crank out another monster hit album!

This was a request from my 39 year old daughter for her birthday. She is trying to replace some of her older albums and CDs. She could not wait to unwrap the CD and play it. She said it brought back so many memories.
